How do commercial aroma diffusers work?

No heat, no water, no aerosol. Pressurised air, a fine dry vapour, and a schedule.

Short answer

A commercial aroma diffuser uses cold-air nano-atomisation: pressurised air breaks fragrance oil into microscopic dry particles that stay suspended in the air rather than settling as a mist. Nothing is heated, diluted with water or propelled by an aerosol, so the oil is not altered and no residue lands on surfaces. Output is controlled by an app or timer, typically consuming around 1.25 ml of oil per hour at a medium intensity setting.

Why cold-air atomisation, not heat or water

Heat changes the composition of a fragrance oil, so a warmed diffuser drifts off-profile as it runs. Water-based ultrasonic units add humidity and dilute the scent, which is why they struggle in large commercial volumes. Aerosols need propellants and fire in bursts you can smell arriving.

Cold-air atomisation avoids all three. Particle size is small enough to stay airborne and disperse evenly, which is what makes a scent read as ambient rather than as a device in the corner.

  • No heat — the fragrance profile stays as blended
  • No water — no added humidity, no dilution
  • No propellant — nothing to dispose of, nothing to smell but the scent
  • Dry vapour — no oily film on glass, stock or soft furnishings

Coverage, consumption and running cost

A standalone commercial diffuser covers up to 500m²; an HVAC or AHU-integrated system covers up to 1,000m². Those figures are deliberately conservative against the volume maths so that intensity can be raised later without swapping hardware.

At a 1.25 ml per hour baseline, a site scenting eight hours a day, five days a week uses roughly 2.6 litres a year. Cutting intensity outside peak hours, or scheduling off periods, is the fastest way to lower that.

  • Standalone: up to 500m² — £599 ex VAT or £59/month billed annually
  • HVAC / AHU: up to 1,000m² — £799 ex VAT or £99/month billed annually
  • 500 ml cartridge, typically an 8–10 week refill cycle

Control, scheduling and safety

Intensity and run times are set per day of the week, so you can scent hard through arrival peaks and drop back when a building is quiet. Settings are changed remotely; nobody needs to be on site with a screwdriver.

Oils are IFRA-certified and supplied with safety data sheets on request, which is what facilities and health-and-safety teams usually want to see before sign-off.

How this differs from retail air fresheners

Plug-ins and reed diffusers release scent passively, so they spike when fresh and fade long before anyone replaces them. Across an estate that means no two sites smell the same. A commercial system holds a set output, on a managed refill cycle, with the same oil in every location.

FAQs

Related questions

Are commercial aroma diffusers noisy?
They run at a low hum comparable to a small fan and are usually inaudible in occupied front-of-house space. Duct and plant-room installations are not heard at all.
Do they need plumbing or special power?
No. A standalone unit runs from a standard 3-pin socket. HVAC and AHU installations need access to plant or ductwork, which our engineers handle.
How often does the oil need replacing?
A 500 ml cartridge typically lasts eight to ten weeks at normal commercial hours. On subscription, refills are included and scheduled for you.
Can we change the scent later?
Yes. Cartridges are swapped, not re-plumbed, so a change of fragrance is a visit rather than a new installation.
